Washington Capitals Battle Buffalo Sabres 2-0 in Memory of Abe Pollin

WASHINGTON D.C. (November 25) — Semyon Varlamov, the Washington Capitals 21-year-old goaltender, recorded his first regular-season shutout by making 25 saves against the Buffalo Sabres in a 2-0 victory Wednesday night that was completed without the Capitals’ star Alex Ovechkin, following a third period ejection for a hard shoulder check called boarding and resulting game misconduct at 3:38.

“You lose the most prolific scorer on the planet Earth, which is tough,” said Capitals’ defenseman Brian Pothier.  “But you have to kill a 5-minute penalty.  As Ovie’s skating off the ice, we’re telling him, ‘We’ve got this one for you.’  He does so much for our team.  Every night, he bails us out.  We could sure do it for him.”

Ovechkin put the Capitals up 1-0 at 6:24 of the first period, his 17th of the season.  Shots came slowly, both teams playing aggressive, trapping defense.  There were no penalties in the first two periods.

Prior to the singing of the National Anthem, there was moment of silence in memory of Mr. Abe Pollin, Capitals owner from 1974 to 1999, who used his own money to build Verizon Center and revitalized the Washington D.C. Chinatown area, along with numerous other real estate improvement projects around the District. Pollin died Tuesday at the age of 85 from a rare brain disease.  Funeral services were held Friday and a public memorial service is scheduled on Decemeber 8th at Verizon Center.

Capitals Rally Over Flyers 4-2, Win 5th Straight

By Pete Silver
OffWing Opinion

WASHINGTON D.C. (October 27) – They got mad, they got even, and they doubled up.

The last thing on the agenda Tuesday night was the Olympics, yet this game provided an enticing preview of the future matchup featuring Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin and Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger.

Both teams stormed the ice and by the end of the first period had combined for 21 shots on goal, but solid goaltending from Capitals Jose Theodore and Flyers Ray Emery kept the score at nil.

In the second, Philadelphia’s physical play started to wear on the Capitals attack.  The Flyers Scott Hartnell scored on a power play at 3:06.  Philadelphia successfully stymied two Capitals power plays, including a 2-man advantage lasting over 90 seconds.  Philadelphia poured it on with a second power play goal from a Braydon Coburn slapshot, and threatened to bring an abrupt end to the Capitals four-game winning streak.

The red sweaters were down 2-0, but they weren’t out.  “We got a little bit angry, it was good for us,” said Nicklas Backstrom, Capitals forward.  Late in the second period, Alex Ovechkin found the net, bringing life to the team and the crowd.  Two minutes later, Backstrom capitalized on a power play to tie the game 2-2.

Despite 21 shots on net, the third period was all Washington.  Jose Theodore held his ground, amassing 41 saves.  Capitals Head Coach Bruce Boudreau tipped his hat to Jose’s performance, saying “Theo kept us in the game..he was really solid.”

At 5:24 of the third, Alexander Semin beat Emery from the top of the zone with a shot that deflected off Flyers’ defenseman Kimmo Timonen.  It was Semin’s seventh goal of the season, putting the Capitals on top 3-2.

Ovechkin scored the final blow with an open net goal at 19:14 to seal the win at 4-2; it was Ovechkin’s eleventh goal of the season.  Nicklas Backstrom scored four points with one goal and three assists.

Capitals Bite Sharks, Break Streak

By Pete Silver
OffWing Opinion

WASHINGTON D.C. (October 15) — The Washington Capitals made a statement Thursday night, ending a 4-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks.

Goals from Matt Bradley and Alexander Semin (his sixth of the season, tied for second in the NHL) combined with two from NHL goal leader Alexander Ovechkin completed the offensive assault. The win ended the Sharks’ 11-game win streak against the Capitals, which included 6 consecutive road wins dating back to February 1999.

Following a strong playoff performance last season, the young Capitals team exhibited strong discipline by staying out of the penalty box, while leaving San Jose short-handed for over 8 minutes in the first period, which included two 5-on-3 power plays.

Shooting IndyCar Racing

This photo was taken by Scott Kelby of an IndyCar.

Scott Kelby, the author of Photoshop Insider has a great post about the opportunity he had/created to shoot IndyCar racing. For the photography insiders you might think that Scott got this opportunity through his connections from the speaking and instruction circuit, but you would be wrong.

His post does a great job of explaining what it is like to shoot something new in general and IndyCar racing specifically.

Shooting Indy Report (and the scoop on getting media credentials) by Scott is very similar to my experiences here at OffWing Photo. So if you are interested in any of the following give it a read.

Who Was That Team In Red On The Ice?

Coach Bruce Boudreau said it best, “We stunk. I’m not sure how I even characterize it, but we got beat to every loose puck, seemed like they had the puck on the power-play for the whole two minutes in our zone every time. I can’t sugar coat it and I can’t find excuses for it.”

In the end the Panther’s took the Caps to the shed for a beating, final score was 6-2. The score would have been 6-1, if not for the determination of Alex Ovechkin in the final minute that he was going to score. Down on the ice gave me the opportunity to see the determination in Alex’s eyes, he was absolutely going to score, nothing was going to stop him.

The photo above is of Alex just after his goal; no trademark fist-pumping, no jump into the boards, or big toothy smile. That goal was for Alex alone. The lack of celebration? Maybe that was for Don Cherry.

GMU Upsets Northeastern For Homecoming Win

Mason lost its fifth straight road game on Thursday night to Delaware. Despite suffering on the road they are still in third place behind Northeastern and VCU. Which made their homecoming verse Northeastern all that more important. The last time these two teams met up was a thriller a month ago in Boston, NE won in the last seconds of the game.

Michael Morrison

At the end of the first half NE lead Mason 20-17. Both teams defense lived up to their reputation and repeatedly shut down their opponents. There were a few sloppy plays and turnovers but for the most part the defense was the story for both teams.

Dre Smith

The other highlight for the Patriots was a growing phenomenon known as Mason Nation. G-M-U! What! G-M-U! What! That was the war cry for a packed homecoming game at the Patriot Center. The student sections sprawled up to the rafters, compared to over the winter break were the same sections were only a dozen rows deep at most.

George Mason went on to win the game 64-53 which keeps them undefeated at home. They will take on Drexel Wednesday night and hopefully keep their home streak alive. They need all the wins they can get to boost their confidence as they soon will enter the month of madness.

The Green Machine Rolls Over Panthers

WASHINGTON, DC – FEBRUARY 7: Mike Green of the Washington Capitals celebrates with teammate Jeff Schultz following his third period goal against the Florida Panthers during a NHL hockey game on February 7, 2009 at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. (Photo by Allen Clark/OffWing Photo)

“He’s (Mike Green) pretty good,” said Capital’s Coach Bruce Boudreau. “He even played well defensively today.” Green scored the game winner at the beginning of the third period and then put the game out of reach when he scored an empty-net goal late with just over a minute left in play.

Green continued his hot hand by scoring twice in tonight’s game, now the longest goal streak ever by a Washington defenseman, having now scored goals in his last seven straight games. He scored his 18th and 19th goals of the season.

After tonight’s game the Capitals hold a 13-point lead over Florida in the Southeast Division standings, sitting second in the Eastern Conference.

Rare Occasion At Home, Caps Fall To LA Kings

I am an optimist so here is the good news first.

Alex Ovechkin

WASHINGTON, DC – FEBRUARY 5: Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals controls the puck during a NHL hockey game against the Los Angeles Kings on February 5, 2009 at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. (Photo by Allen Clark/OffWing Photo)

Alex Ovechkin scored his 200th NHL career goal and has now become only the fourth player in NHL history to score 200 goals in his first four years in the league. With this goal he also erased another NHL franchise that he hasn’t scored on, now the list only includes the San Jose Sharks.

Brooks Laich

Mike Green continued his scoring hot streak and now leads all defenseman in the league with his 17 goals. Green’s production is even more amazing when you consider that there are only 14 players, all forwards, in the NHL who have averaged more points per game.

Jonathan Quick

WASHINGTON, DC – FEBRUARY 5: Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings makes a save during a NHL hockey game against the Washington Capitals on February 5, 2009 at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. (Photo by Allen Clark/OffWing Photo)

Unfortunately last minute heroics came up short and the Kings were able to earn what has been a rare win (5-4) at home against the Capitals in the Verizon Center this year. Goalie Jonathan Quick of the LA Kings able to hold of an onslaught of shots late in third period as the Capitals tried to overcome what had grown to 3 point deficit.

Tonight’s game is the second and final match-up this season between the Washington Capitals and the LA Kings. Back in November, it was the Kings that got the win (5-2), which included three in the third period (two in empty nets).

Ovechkin Scores Hat Trick In Win Against Ottawa Senators

WASHINGTON, DC – FEBRUARY 1: Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals scores in the first period against goalie Brian Elliot of the Ottawa Senators during a NHL hockey game on February 1, 2009 at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. (Photo by Allen Clark/OffWing)

Ottawa Head Coach probably summed it up best following the game speaking about Alex Ovechkin, “He’s the star of the league. People pay a lot of money to come watch him play and he performs every night. He’s certainly worth the price of admission; not for the other team, he isn’t, but certainly for the fans.”

The Caps had an outstanding weekend at home. This weekend they had a big win against the Detroit Redwings and today they kept the momentum going in winning 7-4 against the visiting Ottawa Senators. “It’s important because if we get into the play-offs and you have to play back-to-back like Monday/Tuesday, Thursday/Friday type thing you can’t let emotion be the sole dictator of how you play, said Coach Bruce Boudreau. “You have to do it day after day after day. We wanted to make a point of playing well after and emotional day yesterday.”

Tonight’s game was a battle for first place both Georgia State and GMU were 2-0 in the conference. The only other team undefeated in the conference is Northwestern which Mason will take on in two weeks. Mason will be seeking revenge from last year’s match up with Georgia State where the Patriots lost a 16 point lead in the last four minutes of the game.

At the end of the first half Mason held Georgia State to only 21 points while scoring 27 themselves. Mason struggled from three point range only sinking one of ten. The real story was Monroe at 6′7″ who was more then Georgia State could handle and dominated in the paint fighting for seven rebounds and ten points. Defenders had a difficult time guarding him as he overpowered them using his large frame to his advantage.

Dre Smith

In the second half Mason was a little sloppy having several turnovers and almost allowed Georgia State back into the game. One of the highlights of the second half was when Mason in-bounded the ball off the back of the opposing team to then blow by him on a break. This wasn’t the most technical of plays or one a coach really likes to see but the crowd sure loved it and Mason went on to win 58-52.

The Caps went on a scoring spree going up three to one and then held off Buffalo to gain the win. Alex Ovechkin scored what would become the game winning score by slicing and dicing the defense.

“It was a pretty cool goal,” admitted Alex Ovechkin afterwards. “It happens sometimes … I just made some moves. Puck was probably neutral, so I won the battle. I was tired and I just fell, and I shoot. It was in, so that’s pretty cool. It was a great goal and I’m glad it happened to me.”

GMU Patriots Get The Win, Tulane Gets A Lump Of Coal

Tonight’s game was the first ever match-up between Tulane and Mason. Tulane came into the game just over .500 with a 5-4 record while Mason continues to roll with a 7-2 record. The Patriot victory brings the program’s all time wins up to an impressive 600. Last Friday against Radford Sophomore Cam Long was the star of the show with a career high 21 points. Long was the latest Patriot player to lead the team in scoring, Mason has had six different players who have lead the team in scoring this season.

Ryan Pearson

FAIRFAX, VA – DECEMBER 22: Ryan Pearson #24 of the George Mason Patriots drives on Daniel Plunkett #44 and Assim McQueen #4 of the Tulane Green Wave during a non-conference game at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA on December 22, 2008. (Photo by Allen Clark/www.OffWingPhoto.com)

At the end of the first half a pessimist would view the game as poor offence and week shooting percentage from both teams. Mason shot 38% and Tulane shot a dismal 29% from the field. But an optimist would say the defense was excellent and the hustling and rebounding were superb, 22 rebounds logged in for Tulane and 21 for Mason. And finally a realist would say the game went back and forth with 7 ties and 7 lead changes which ended the half in a 29-21 Mason lead.

Mason controlled the lead and the game the entire 2nd half and ended up winning 60-52. Vaughan lead the team in scoring with 16 points, Pearson and Monroe also had double digits. Mason’s next game is on the road against Dayton and then they return home on January 3rd to play a struggling (3-8) UNC Wilmington who is in their conference.

Caps Fall To Florida Panthers

Last night we had guest photographer, Bill Ingalls shooting for us.

Besides being a long time friend, Bill has traveled the world photographing missions for NASA. His assignments have taken him from familiar locations, such as the Kennedy Space Center, to the inside of an active volcano in Alaska; the Oval Office; the inside of a DC-8, flying through a hurricane; the hearing rooms of Capitol Hill, to the brutally cold Kazakh steppes.

Bill’s work has been featured in Apple’s professional profiles. An exhibition of Bill’s photos can be viewed at the Washington School of Photography until December 10, 2008. The exhibition was part of FotoWeek DC 2008, a week long celebration of photography in the nation’s capital.

Win Over Ohio Gives Mason A Lifetime .500

George Mason is off to a strong start this season with a record coming into the game at 4-1. They took on Ohio’s Bobcats from the MAC conference who have only played two games, both of which were victorious.

Mason scored first and kept the lead the entire first half with their largest lead of 19. They ended the first half up by ten doing an excellent job on defense holding the Bobcats to merely 30 points. The Patriots forced 9 turnovers and did not allow Ohio any easy looks at the basket. Ohio only shot 33% compared to Mason who shot 55%. With a lead of ten Mason was still worried, knowing that last year they where up by 18 over the Bobcats at half and ended up loosing the game.

History did not repeat itself as Mason held the lead the entire game to win 74-65. The Patriots spread the wealth on scoring and five players score double figures, Smith and Long leading the team with 15 points a piece. Monroe was a dominant force on the boards rebounding 9.

Ohio has a new coach in with two games under his belt compared to Larranaga with 710. An interesting side note, Mason’s all time record is just shy of .500 at 596-597 with their first ever game and win back in 1966 against U.S. Navy’s Bethesda Hospital team. That was also the only time Mason’s all time record was over .500.

The Patriots will play Liberty on the road Monday followed by their first CAA game on the road against Drexel. They return to the Patriot Center December 19th to face Radford and try to keep their undefeated home streak going.
