WASHINGTON D.C. (November 25) — Semyon Varlamov, the Washington Capitals 21-year-old goaltender, recorded his first regular-season shutout by making 25 saves against the Buffalo Sabres in a 2-0 victory Wednesday night that was completed without the Capitals’ star Alex Ovechkin, following a third period ejection for a hard shoulder check called boarding and resulting game misconduct at 3:38.

“You lose the most prolific scorer on the planet Earth, which is tough,” said Capitals’ defenseman Brian Pothier.  “But you have to kill a 5-minute penalty.  As Ovie’s skating off the ice, we’re telling him, ‘We’ve got this one for you.’  He does so much for our team.  Every night, he bails us out.  We could sure do it for him.”

Ovechkin put the Capitals up 1-0 at 6:24 of the first period, his 17th of the season.  Shots came slowly, both teams playing aggressive, trapping defense.  There were no penalties in the first two periods.

Prior to the singing of the National Anthem, there was moment of silence in memory of Mr. Abe Pollin, Capitals owner from 1974 to 1999, who used his own money to build Verizon Center and revitalized the Washington D.C. Chinatown area, along with numerous other real estate improvement projects around the District. Pollin died Tuesday at the age of 85 from a rare brain disease.  Funeral services were held Friday and a public memorial service is scheduled on Decemeber 8th at Verizon Center.

Image of The Day

While researching for Game 2 of the NHL’s Eastern Conference quarterfinal series hockey game between the Washington Capitals and the Philadelphia Flyers I was clicking around the Caps website. While there I clicked on a graphic for “Image of the Day.”

A few others (shout out to tai.shar who also frequents our galleries) had found the gallery which includes just one photo per day, really. Nothing more. Well, it is a start. It looks like photographers for the away games are also posting a picture.

For more Cap pictures you can check out OffWing on flickr.

We will be back tomorrow with pictures from game 2. Later.

Fun With Flickr

OffWing Photo uses both Photoshelter and Flickr to share our photos with clients and with fans. Like any good handyman the trick is using the right tool for the right job.

One tool that I have started using is referred to as a Badge by Flickr. Flickr provides both html and flash versions that you can include as part of any website. They also have several different layout options that you can personalize. Photoshelter has just launched a similar service however it is not as robust as the Flickr tool.

Following is an example of a Flickr badge, using photos from the last game we shot.

Updates To The Site For The New Year

I am taking advantage of some of my “down time” right now to make some updates to the site that I have been meaning to do for some time.
I have been working in what seems to me to be the bowels of Movable Type’s publishing platform to create some new pages and templates.
I have also been playing around with FLICKR’s badges which is something I have also been wanting to do for awhile. I used this to put up a feed of my OffWing photos onto my personal website, you can check it out here. The photo farther down the page, below the large image slideshow.
I also hope to begin using FLICKR’s badges in different ways around the site.
Stay tuned and Happy New Year!

The Thrill of the Shoot

So with the start of our new photoblog, courtesy of Allen Clark (Thanks Allen), coinciding with the start of hockey season, I thought this was a good time to reflect on the past year. It was a little over 11 months ago that Eric told me about his idea to add photographic coverage to Off Wing Opinion
