Recovering From An “Unconfirmed” Tornado
Sorry for not posting anything in a while, but my neighborhood was hit by big storm last Wednesday and we are still recovering.
Power was restored 2 days later, our phone was working but is back out again, and we just got our Internet back this morning, nearly 6 days after the storm.
All things considered we feel pretty lucky because a huge tree fell into our front yard blocking the street and taking down all the wires to the utilities. Had the tree been 15 ft taller it would have gone through the front windows of our home.
Be patient….I am still clearing the tree from my front yard and wires still block our driveway. I am hoping to post something photographic soon.
New Functionality to OffWing Photo
We just installed a nice little tool on this site called Snap Shots that enhances links with visual previews of the destination site, interactive excerpts of Wikipedia articles, MySpace profiles, IMDb profiles and Amazon products, display inline videos, RSS, MP3s, photos, stock charts and more.
Sometimes Snap Shots bring you the information you need, without your having to leave the site, while other times it lets you “look ahead,” before deciding if you want to follow a link or not.
Should you decide this is not for you, just click the Options icon in the upper right corner of the Snap Shot and opt-out.
This feature does run ads, but we have set the preferences to show charitable organizations.
Enjoy!
Fun With Flickr
OffWing Photo uses both Photoshelter and Flickr to share our photos with clients and with fans. Like any good handyman the trick is using the right tool for the right job.
One tool that I have started using is referred to as a Badge by Flickr. Flickr provides both html and flash versions that you can include as part of any website. They also have several different layout options that you can personalize. Photoshelter has just launched a similar service however it is not as robust as the Flickr tool.
Following is an example of a Flickr badge, using photos from the last game we shot.

Fun Online Tool
I saw this first on Photojojo’s website a few days ago and had a chance to try it out with one of my photos.
Mag My Pic has many different covers to choose from, just wish that I could get it at printable quality. But who am I to complain about something that is free. Drop by the site to check out the different covers available, the current count is 16 covers.

Caps “Could’a – Should’a” Against Toronto
The viewers back home in Canada watching “Hockey Night” must have loved last night’s game between the Washington Capitals and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Caps seemed to do everything but win last night, losing to Toronto 3-2.
Capitals forward Victor Kozlov summed it up this way after the game, “Our intensity was there but we didn’t score on our chances. They had great goaltending.”

Matt Cooke, who was recently acquired by the Caps from Vancouver got his start in Saturday night’s game. Head Coach Bruce Boudreau said this about Cooke’s play. “He was a little tentative. It’s a different way we play here than the way Vancouver plays.”

Alex Ovechkin got back down to business after going scoreless in the past seven games, the longest of his NHL career.

Getty Images In My Rearview Window
This Monday the private equity firm of Hellman & Friedman bought Getty for a cool $2.4 billion. You can read more about the details as they were released yesterday from Hellman & Friedman.
As a refugee from the heady Internet days and the Telecom mergers there are a few things I have learned after being bought, sold and merged more times than I can recall. First off, what this really means probably won’t get sorted out until later this year or early in 2009. The deal isn’t supposed to close until the second quarter of this year.
Secondly, don’t ever buy the phrase, “we are different, a merger of equals.” I laugh when I hear that one, there is always a buyer and the one being bought. In this case Hellman & Friedman bought Getty, we won’t know what the “New Getty” looks like and how it operates.
Photographer and blogger John Harrington has been following Getty’s moves and photo industry impact over the past couple of years and did some “crystal balling.” Today he posted his insights which on the whole I agree with.
Hang on for another year of big changes in the business of photography.

Getting Great Photos For Your Publication
Are you unsatisfied with the pictures your photographer comes back with. Or are you a beginning/occasional sports photographer looking for the edge?
A great story was posted over at the On Sports sports blog with tips on getting better photos for your sport section.

While written primarily for the sports editor or writer, the tips can just as easily be used by the photographer going into a new situation, sport, or working with a new writer.
Site Improvements
After a couple of hours of futzing around I have been able to fix the archives and some of the other functionality of the web site. Enjoy!
Sorry For The Long Entries
We are still working out some of the kinks here at OffWing Photo. We are currently unable to provide links of extended entries so we will have to post our entire stories until we are able to fix.
Thanks for your continued interest….
Welcome To OffWing Photo
Welcome to the newest of OffWing’s blogs.
visiting our Photoshelter gallery.
OffWing Photo will focus a bit more on the photography of OffWing. We would like to share some of what we have learned and the resources that we turn to.
I have been very fortunate to team up with my long time friend Eric McErlain who started OffWing.. It is amazing to think that OffWing is nearing its first year of original photography to accompany the stellar original editorial.
More later after tonight’s match-up between the Caps and the Hurricanes.
